‘Don’t take the bait’: Minneapolis mayor hits out at ‘intolerable’ ICE after shooting

Minnesotans ‘shaken’ as ICE goes door-to-door asking Americans to rat out Asian neighbors

Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey has hit out at Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after a man was shot in the leg during an operation.

A federal officer shot a man in the leg in north Minneapolis, with the incident sparking protests soon after the death of Renee Nicole Good. The 37-year-old mother was shot and killed by ICE agents earlier this month, with outcry over the death still fresh. Hundreds of protestors had gathered at the scene of last night’s shooting, with a man shot in the leg by a federal agent, The Guardian reported.

Mayor Frey has since issued a statement calling on protestors to go home in a statement given after the shooting of the unnamed man. He said, “I’ve seen conduct from ICE that is disgusting and intolerable.”

“We cannot counter Donald Trump’s chaos with more chaos … Anyone who is taking the bait tonight, stop,” he said. “You are not helping the undocumented immigrants in our city.”

In a statement posted on X, the Department of Homeland Security claimed the operation was undertaken to secure a Venezuelan immigrant. The department wrote, “At 6:50 PM CT, federal law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop in Minneapolis of an illegal alien from Venezuela.”

The department also claimed the agent involved in the operation had been “ambushed” by two individuals, with one person shot. Their statement reads, “As the officer was being ambushed and attacked by the two individuals, the original subject got loose and began striking the officer with a shovel or broom stick.”

“Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired a defensive shot to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg.”

“All three subjects ran back into the apartment and barricaded themselves inside. The attacked officer and subject are both in the hospital. Both attackers are in custody.”

Details given by the DHS are yet to be verified, with the government agency also claiming last week that Good had attacked a federal agent with her car.

Senior officials have since resigned from Harmeet Dhillon’s Department of Justice team after the Assistant Attorney General ruled out an investigation into the shooting of Good.

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the decision not to investigate, calling it a “cover-up” in a post to X.
