Times Reporters Are on a Scientific Expedition to Antarctica. Send in Your Questions.

For much of January and February, Raymond Zhong, a New York Times climate reporter, and Chang W. Lee, a Times photographer, are traveling with a scientific expedition to study Antarctica’s fastest melting glacier. You can follow their progress here.

They are aboard the Araon, a South Korean icebreaker, with nearly 40 scientists from around the world. The destination is the Thwaites, an immense and remote glacier whose uncertain fate could affect global sea-level rise for generations to come.

Raymond and Chang are sending updates from the expedition, and they want to answer questions from students of all ages.

What would you like to know about this difficult and occasionally harrowing trip? Please send in a short video with your question.

For example, maybe you’re wondering about …

  • What the scientists hope to do and why — and how they’ll go about it

  • What it’s like to live and work on the “frozen continent”

  • Who the people are on the trip and how they were chosen

  • What wildlife the team will encounter

  • What daily life on the expedition is like, including what the team does for fun when they’re not working

  • What the people on the expedition are eating and drinking

  • What preparation and training the team had to go through before the trip began

Send in your video questions by filling out this form:

Note: Please shoot vertically, centering the student in the frame from the waist up. The student should speak directly to the camera.

Each video should be about 15 to 30 seconds long, and shorter is better.

We will reach out for permission from a parent or guardian if we decide to use a video, so please double check the contact information before submitting.
