The New York City police said a man who had been driving a car involved in a motor vehicle incident was shot after he drew what appeared to be a weapon, the second fatal police shooting on Thursday night.
The man, who was not identified, was 37 and driving a BMW, the police said. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, Assistant Chief James McCarthy said at a news briefing early Friday.
Chief McCarthy said that at about 10:53 p.m., officers patrolling Manhattan’s West Village were alerted by two people who reported being in a motor vehicle incident with a BMW. He did not provide details about the nature of the incident, saying only that the BMW had attempted to flee and had been stopped in traffic.
The driver then exited the vehicle with what appeared to be a firearm and aimed it at officers, who fired their weapons, Chief McCarthy said.
“The officers repeatedly, as shown on body-worn camera, asked him to drop the gun because they wanted to render him aid,” Chief McCarthy said. “He didn’t say anything.”
Emergency medical technicians transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:17 p.m., Chief McCarthy said. An imitation firearm was recovered at the scene.
The shooting happened near Bedford Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, the Police Department said.
