In the wake of the most recent shooting by federal immigration agents in Oregon on Thursday, the FBI issued a statement on social media describing what it called an “agent-involved shooting” that left “two individuals wounded.”
However, that post was soon deleted, with the agency issuing a new revised statement, one with differences that MS NOW argued amounted to a blatant “change in narrative.”
On Thursday, two people were wounded after being shot by Customs and Border Patrol agents in Portland. Both people reportedly survived the shooting but were being treated for injuries at a hospital. FBI Portland swiftly issued a statement on the incident, alleging the two people had weaponized their vehicle against law enforcement.
“That post was removed,” noted MS NOW national reporter Rosa Flores. “Now, when we asked the FBI for information about this case, they sent us this statement – pay close attention to the word usage here.”
In the FBI’s revised statement, several phrases were replaced, and in such a manner as to place more blame on the two people shot by federal immigration agents, Flores reported.
“Notice the word usage: in the first statement, it refers to an ‘agent-involved shooting’ – the second statement says an ‘assault’ on federal officers,” Flores said.
“The first statement says ‘two individuals were wounded’ – the second statement says that these were two ‘assailants’ that fled the scene. We’ve asked the FBI why the change in narrative, why the change in word usage, and we have not heard back.”
The latest shooting comes just days after the killing of a Minneapolis woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, which itself was the ninth shooting by an immigration officer in the past four months.
