Deranged mom kills baby with frying pan in luxe California apartment complex: cops

A deranged mom bludgeoned her baby daughter to death with a frying pan inside their ritzy Los Angeles County apartment, cops and sources said.

Carmen Anita Degregg, 24, who was once a star high-school wrestler, is accused of killing her 15-month-old baby on Tuesday inside The Charlie luxury apartments complex in Santa Monica, where studio apartments start at $3,200 per month and go as high as $6,000 for larger units.

Degregg was arrested under bizarre circumstances, after she approached cops on the UCLA campus Tuesday and told them she had hurt her child and that the infant was in the apartment, according to Santa Monica police.

Cops found the child gravely wounded and she was pronounced dead after the Santa Monica Fire Department rushed her to a local hospital, cops said.

Degregg is now charged with murder and felony assault on a child under age 8 causing death, according to papers filed by the Los Angeles District Attorney Thursday.

A neighbor who lives in the apartment above Degregg said she heard suspicious sounds coming from the unit below on the morning of the killing while taking out the trash, according to KTLA.

“I heard a woman talking, but like in distress, kind of gossiping and something weird coming exactly from that apartment around 9 o’clock, saying, ‘We need to leave,’” the neighbor told the outlet. “She left a baby there.”

Investigators spent hours at the scene gathering evidence and left the apartment with boxes of materials, KTLA reported.

It’s unclear whether the baby’s father lived in the complex. He was brought in for questioning and released without charges, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Online photos show Degregg winning a first-place medal for a high school wrestling competition in 2018 and celebrating graduation in 2019 from Everett High School in Washington.

Degregg’s bail is set at $2 million. If convicted, she faces 25 years to life in prison.

She appeared in court for her scheduled arraignment Friday and did not enter a plea. She will next appear in court on Feb. 23.
