A woman was killed in a shooting involving ICE agents in Minneapolis on Wednesday, according to reports.
ICE officials claimed that a “rioter” attempted to use her vehicle to target agents, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary Dept. of Homeland Security, released a statement on X.
“Today, ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism,” McLaughlin said.
“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots,” she said. “He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers.”
The driver, whose name was not immediately released, was shot and killed. ICE officers who were apparently injured were expected tor recover, she added.
McLaughlin also claimed that the incident was a “direct consequence of constant attacks and demonization of our officers by sanctuary politicians who fuel and encourage rampant assaults on our law enforcement.”
Nearly 2,000 ICE agents were sent to Minneapolis this week in the largest immigration crackdown in the Twin Cities.
A group of protesters had gathered in the area where the shooting happened, CNN’s Whitney Wild reported.
“This has been going on for a couple of days now. We know that DHS Secretary Kristi Noem was here in the Minneapolis area yesterday, and what we see now is this real peak moment here where, based on our understanding, there was a shooting involving federal law enforcement here and as Gov. Tim Walz said, involving an ICE agent, we are learning to, you know, trying to learn as much as we can,” Wild said.
Crowds were growing frustrated at law enforcement in the area.
“But let me just get you, you know, another picture of the crowd here, because this is a city where these George Floyd riots are not far in the rear view mirror,” she added. “And what I keep hearing from people in this area is they say, if you thought that was bad, this city is about to explode. And so the the line that Minneapolis police are towing right now is to try to keep this calm and not inflame the crowd because they do not want another option. They cannot have a repeat of the George Floyd riots.”
