Lawmakers were outraged Wednesday after an ICE agent shot and killed a 37-year-old woman driving in Minneapolis and video surfaced differing from the Department of Homeland Security’s portrayal of the incident.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz issued a stern warning to President Donald Trump and his administration after weeks of sounding the alarm that the largest deployment of ICE agents in the U.S. was putting Minnesotans in danger. Trump has released a statement blaming “the radical left” and claiming the agent was in danger.
But other officials, including Walz, pushed back on those allegations.
“I’ve seen the video. Don’t believe this propaganda machine. The state will ensure there is a full, fair, and expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice,” Walz wrote on X.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey told ICE that it was time to leave after the woman, whose name was not released, was shot dead in front of her neighbors.
“I have a message for ICE: Get the f— out of Minneapolis,” Frey said.
Other lawmakers sounded off on the fatal ICE shooting:
“I am monitoring the tragic and fatal ICE Shooting in Minneapolis today, and will be closely watching as more information becomes available. ICE has spent the last year conducting authoritarian and community wreaking havoc. ICE agents have repeatedly shown a gross lack of training and disregard for law enforcement norms and constitutional rights. Now they have killed a woman in front of her neighbors. Today’s horrific events exemplify the consequences of their recklessness and incompetence. Get ICE out of our neighborhoods,” Rep. Doris Matsui (D-CA) wrote on X.
‘I condemn this brutal murder in Minneapolis by ICE agents. There should be bipartisan outrage about this tragedy. The Republican majorities in Congress need to join with Democrats to demand reform and accountability. This violence cannot and should not be normalized,” Rep. Dwight Evans (D-PA) wrote on X.
“An ICE agent shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis today. This Administration has raced to hire and deploy thousands of armed agents to American cities, without adequate training. This tragedy shows just how dangerous that is,” Rep. Greg Stanton (D-AZ) wrote on X.
“The latest scenes out of Minneapolis are stomach-churning. This is a terrifying escalation of violence and these ICE agents must be held accountable,” Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) wrote on X.
“An American citizen was murdered by federal agents today. @StephenM, on behalf of Trump, is running and defending a rogue authoritarian regime. This is tyranny. ICE out of our cities now,” Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) wrote on X.
