An order from Donald Trump handed down to Republican Party representatives would be a “sure to lose” situation should they follow it.
GOP reps believe the “flexible” suggestion from the president over the Hyde Amendment would mean the party are “sure to lose” in the midterm elections. The Hyde Amendment prevents federal funds from being used on abortion services, though Trump has seemingly called for Republican Party reps to ease off on this amendment.
Trump said, “Now, you have to be a little flexible on Hyde.” But flexibility could tear through the core Republican voter base, according to Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser. In a statement reported on by The Hill, Dannenfelser suggested the GOP are “sure to lose” if they follow Trump’s order.
She wrote, “If Republicans abandon Hyde, they are sure to lose this November.” Other Republican Party worries were highlighted by a party affiliate who says the “curse” of being in government was that they would lose support from younger voters.
Adam Pennings, executive director of young Republicans group Run GenZ, said, “It’s really the curse of the majority, right?” This is a point echoed by Republican strategist Ron Bonjean, who says the figures in the lead-up to the midterms around young voter intentions “should be very concerning to Republicans”.
Said figures are from a Yale Youth Poll which found voters between the ages of 18 and 34 preferred Democratic candidates to Republican candidates by between 15 and 20 points.
The Freedom Caucus board has since weighed in on the upcoming midterms, with a letter issued suggesting the “entire future” of the country is at stake.
The letter reads, “It is not simply an election at stake, but the entire future of the United States of America, and we must act accordingly.” GOP scrambling ahead of the midterms comes as Trump appears to have called for the election to be cancelled.
“I won’t say cancel the election, they should cancel the election because the fake news will say ‘he wants the elections canceled. He’s a dictator.’ They always call me a dictator,” a grinning Trump said.
