White House communications director Steven Cheung took to X on Tuesday to gloat that they had successfully baited mainstream media into spotlighting a federal website loaded with lies and pro-Trump propaganda about the Jan.6 insurrection against the U.S. Capitol, which prompted Trump’s second impeachment in the final days of his first term and led to the largest criminal investigation in American history.
“LOL! Can’t believe MSDNC actually fell for our trap in covering the new January 6 page on the White House website,” wrote Cheung, linking to the website and posting emojis of the peace sign and the American flag above a video clip of MS NOW covering the false claims in the site.
The website, published under the official White House .gov domain, promotes a number of false claims about Jan. 6, 2021, including that the 2020 presidential election was stolen and the rioters were justified; it was actually Capitol Police who were responsible for the violence; then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was responsible for security failures at the Capitol; and the House January 6 Select Committee engaged in abuses of power to undermine President Donald Trump’s reputation.
The page was unveiled as this week marks the fifth anniversary of the attack.
One of Trump’s first official acts upon returning to office was to issue blanket clemency for around 1,500 people arrested, convicted, or who took guilty pleas in connection with January 6. Several of them went on to be re-arrested for other crimes.
Cheung, who previously did communications work for a number of Republican campaigns and the Ultimate Fighting Championship before taking up with Trump, is notorious for his foul-mouthed statements trolling the press for questioning or investigating various aspects of the Trump presidency.
