President Donald Trump’s administration is continuing efforts to acquire Greenland from the Kingdom of Denmark and has doubled down on its threats to use military force to secure the sovereign nation if needed, according to a new report.
In a response to Reuters questions, the Trump administration said that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority for the president and that it is discussing “a range of options” to achieve that end, Sky News reported on Tuesday.
“President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it’s vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region, the statement reads in part. “The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the US military is always an option at the commander-in-chief’s disposal.”
European leaders have roundly condemned Trump’s attempts to acquire Greenland from Denmark, and said that any military action against a European ally would effectively end the North American Treaty Organization, which was created following World War II to counter Soviet expansion in Europe.
