Chevy Chase can’t help himself.
The 82-year-old “Saturday Night Live” alum snapped at the director of his new CNN documentary,“I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” sparking a big reaction from fans on social media.
“I’m just trying to figure you out,” director Marina Zenovich told Chase just minutes into the film, which was released New Year’s Day.
“No s—t,” Chase replied. “It’s not going to be easy for you.”
“Why is it not gonna be easy?” Zenovich asked Chase, who had a ruthless response.
“You’re not bright enough,” he said. “How’s that?”
Zenovich simply replied “woah” to Chase’s insult.
“Well, you asked,” Chase said. “I know you’re not gonna put that on the air, and I hope not.”
“But my answer is, I’m complex, and I’m deep and I can be hurt easily,” the comedian went on. “And I react spontaneously to people who want to figure me out, as it were. As somebody who will hold up my guard, I’m not gonna let anybody figure me out, per se.”
Chase’s behavior was not received well on social media.
“What an insufferable old goat,” one fan wrote on X about Chase.
“People for years said this man was an absolute asshole. I see that now lol,” another fan said.
Someone else tweeted, “Kind of immature, no?”
“Calls the woman unintelligent before proceeding to show through his words and demeanor that he himself is definitely not a bright individual,” a different X user pointed out.
“He sucks so much, jeez. No wonder everyone on Community hated his ass,” another tweet read.
Chase authorized the new documentary that covers the comedy legend’s career, from his rise on “SNL” in 1975 to his fall when he got fired from “Community” in 2013 for using a racial slur.
Chase reportedly used the N-word while disputing his character’s direction during a “Community” scene, involving him using a “blackface” hand puppet. He allegedly had a “meltdown” after the incident and claimed his career was “over.” Chase apologized, but he was let go from the NBC show.
During the doc, the “Caddyshack” actor addressed how he has a reputation for being “difficult.”
“I don’t know what to say about the people who don’t like me, except f –k ’em,” he stated. “What can you say about something like that? I can’t say they’re misunderstanding me. Because maybe they’re not, by their standard. I just prefer to be liked, not disliked — like all of us.”
In an interview with People, Chase said he participated in the doc to clear up misconceptions about him.
“I’m a normal civilian,” he said. “If I have an argument with someone, it’s done in 30 minutes, but a story will go through my whole history.”
