President Donald Trump made the stunning announcement Saturday that the United States would take control of Venezuela following the attack and capture of its president earlier Saturday morning until a transfer of power can be facilitated.
“We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” Trump said, speaking during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
“So we don’t want to be involved with having somebody else get in and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years, so we are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition, and it has to be judicious.”
American forces captured Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro early Saturday morning after a large-scale strike on the nation’s capital, Caracas. Maduro is now en route to New York to face trial on charges of drug trafficking. Trump shared a photo of Maduro Saturday on board the USS Iwo Jima.
Trump announced early Saturday morning that he had ordered a “large-scale strike” on Venezuela as part of its operation to capture Maduro. No deaths have been reported in the attack, though an offhanded remark made by Trump earlier on Saturday suggests that Venezuelans might have been killed.
