An admission from Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), a hardcore supporter of Donald Trump, that he has asked for clarification on the administration’s invasion of Venezuela to capture President Nicolás Maduro and his wife earned him the wrath of some of the MAGA faithful.
Shortly after Trump announced the capture on Truth Social, the conservative lawmaker from Utah posted on X that he had spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio seeking the legal justification for the unprovoked assault on a foreign nation.
Lee wrote, “Just got off the phone with @SecRubio He informed me that Nicolás Maduro has been arrested by U.S. personnel to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States, and that the kinetic action we saw tonight was deployed to protect and defend those executing the arrest warrant This action likely falls within the president’s inherent authority under Article II of the Constitution to protect U.S. personnel from an actual or imminent attack Thank you, @SecRubio, for keeping me apprised”
That set off a firestorm in his comments, with Trump fans lashing out at him for not trusting the president’s judgment.
“See Mike, you didn’t have to panic! This administration has everything under control,” one Trump supporter wrote to which Lee responded, “Raising questions about authority isn’t panicking.”
That led commenter America First Annie to fire back, “This is why so many are turning away from Republicans. You don’t have the presidents back. People are fed up with this Mike. Why should anyone vote for Republicans when they talk like this?”
“Stop being so quick to oppose President Trump,” accused Nathan/Common Conservative.
Magaunicorn advised, “Maybe next time you shouldn’t be running your mouth online. Very unprofessional.”
“So why don’t you delete your posts where you were trying to make this a warmongering issue and drag the constitution into it,” asked ATX Irish Girl.Frost Frippery remarked,
“The President has the authority for 60 days and then another 30 days to withdraw. All without congressional approval. Just stop.”
