Avoid making this annoying mistake to get through airport security quickly: ‘Leads to more delays’

Don’t be this type of traveler.

New year, new insufferable airport antic. This time, travelers are crying foul on an obnoxious habit that’s causing delays at security checkpoints — as if people need more of those.

Dubbed “belt bumping,” this inconsiderate trend sees flyers neglecting to remove their used bins after getting their belongings scanned, invariably clogging up the conveyor belt at the security line.

Security screen scourges generally leave the receptacle on one of the loading tables or even on the conveyor belt itself, which can also create a logjam in the luggage tray, making this situation worse.

In one viral clip, a fed-up flyer can be seen stacking bins that have been abandoned by belt bumpers. “Always having to start a shift at security cause no one cleans up after themselves,” the sky samaritan captioned the clip.

Travelers were none too happy about this flight hub faux pas. “It’s the equivalent to people who don’t put away their shopping trolley,” a traveler named Fleurine Tideman told the Metro. “It’s one of the societal rules that aren’t about legality, so it shows you who people are.”

One exasperated traveler even posted a tutorial on TikTokdetailing how to put one’s luggage containers away after retrieving their belongings.

“Please put your security trays away,” they pleaded. “Every time I travel I’m amazed how many people just leave them on the conveyor belt, which leads to more delays and more work for airport staff or other passengers to deal with.”

“Tables on the side are often there so you don’t hold up other trays if you have to spend more time packing stuff back in, getting dressed etc.,” the traveler explained in the comment section of their video.

Meanwhile, A View From The Wing contributor Gary Leff wrote that he didn’t begrudge peoplefor not stacking their trays, which he dubbed among the most “germ-laden spots in the airport.”

“Everyone touches them, along with their belongings,” he declared. “They’re more crudded up than the monkey from ‘Outbreak.’”

“There’s been self-cleaning technology for years but TSA is too complacent to adopt it,” Leff continued.
