Nobel Prize–winning economist Paul Krugman is warning that the MAGA movement’s internal fractures are only going to get uglier — and more personal. Writing on Substack, Krugman argued that movements built around bigotry inevitably turn inward, noting that even prominent MAGA figures like JD Vance, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Ben Shapiro are now being targeted by racist and antisemitic attacks from within their own ranks. Krugman dubbed the phenomenon “Immigrant Derangement Syndrome,” saying it’s driven from the top down despite growing public backlash to Donald Trump’s increasingly unpopular immigration policies. The warning, he said, is clear: no amount of loyalty or political record will protect MAGA insiders once the movement starts devouring itself.
