Mother Is Charged With Murder in Death of 1-Year-Old Son

The mother of a 1-year-old Queens boy was arrested Monday and charged with killing her son, who was found unconscious and unresponsive in a bathroom, according to police officials and an internal police report.

The woman, Nicole Boodhai, 28, was charged on Monday night with murder and endangering the welfare of a child, the officials said.

Officers responded to a 911 call around 1:30 p.m. Monday regarding an incident inside a home on 157th Street near 108th Avenue in the Jamaica neighborhood, the police said.

They discovered the baby, Charlie Ramraykha, in the bathroom, the police said, and also found Ms. Boodhai, who had slit her wrists in a suicide attempt, according to the report. Officers took Charlie to Jamaica Hospital, where he died.

Ms. Boodhai was hospitalized, according to the report. It was unclear on Tuesday whether she had a lawyer and when she would be arraigned.

The city medical examiner, which performed an autopsy, must do further testing before determining a cause and manner of his death, said Julie Bolcer, a spokeswoman for the agency.

But, according to the police report, Ms. Boodhai had called the child’s father and admitted to killing the boy. Investigators obtained a recording of the call, the report said.

Detectives also discovered pills in the bathroom and believed the child had ingested them, the report said. It was not immediately clear what type of pills they were. There were no visible signs of trauma to the boy’s body, according to the report.

Earlier this year, in March, a 4-year-old boy died after he was found near fentanyl in a Brooklyn homeless shelter. His parents, Miriam Elkayam and Yitzchok Sklar, were charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and abandonment of a child.

Five days later, on March 9, 3-year-old Kyng Davis died after his mother, Sunshyne Davis, and her boyfriend, Robert White, abandoned him at a hospital in Brooklyn.

The medical examiner ruled that both boys’ deaths were homicides, Ms. Bolcer said. It was unclear on Tuesday whether anyone had been charged in the killings.
