Prominent journalist Wajahat Ali fired off at President Donald Trump Friday after video resurfaced of Paula White – the White House spiritual adviser – comparing Trump to God.
“To say no to President Trump would be saying no to God,” White can be heard saying in the resurfaced video, remarks she made on PBS NewsHour in late 2019, the day after Trump was first impeached by the House. “And I won’t do that.”
For Ali, White’s remarks amounted to sacrilege, declaring in a fiery social media post “this is blasphemy.”
White has a storied history with Trump, having served as the head of the evangelical advisory board for the president’s 2016 campaign. She also delivered the invocation for Trump’s 2017 presidential inauguration.
In February, Trump established the White House Faith Office – seen as a successor to the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships established in the Bush administration – and tapped White to lead it.
White is no stranger to controversy and has drawn scrutiny over the years for her teachings. In 2020, she was condemned by many for her payers for the “miscarriages” of “satanic pregnancies.” She’s also drawn scrutiny for her promotion of prosperity theology, the belief that a person’s wealth is directly correlated with the will of God.
In the aforementioned video – a compilation of past remarks compiled by NowThis Impact – White can also be heard declaring the ground she walks on to be “holy.”
“When I walk on White House grounds, God walks on White House grounds,” White can be heard saying in a video captured during a 2019 sermon. “I have every right and authority to declare the White House as holy ground because I was standing there, and where I stand is holy!”
