A Delaware state trooper was killed after gunfire broke out at a motor vehicle office in Wilmington on Tuesday afternoon, leaving the shooter dead and additional people injured, the authorities said.
Deputies responded to a report of an active shooter shortly after 2 p.m. at the Division of Motor Vehicles office, according to a statement by the Delaware State Police.
Soon after, the State Police said there was no longer an active shooter and later that the trooper had been killed.
“We are continuing to assess additional injuries,” said the State Police, which did not share immediate details on the number of people injured.
In a separate statement, Gov. Matt Meyer of Delaware confirmed that the shooter was dead.
“There is no active threat to the public at this time,” he said, adding that “law enforcement acted swiftly to secure the scene.”
It was not clear what led to the shooting and whether it took place inside or outside the office. The identities of the trooper and the shooter were not immediately released on Tuesday afternoon.
The authorities asked people to avoid the area. The Division of Motor Vehicles said it had closed that office, which is in New Castle County, and all others statewide on Tuesday afternoon. Local TV outlets showed a heavy police presence outside the office.
