Taylor Swift ‘felt like a dumbass’ crying onstage during Eras Tour show in Toronto: ‘Embarrassing’

Taylor Swift felt like a “dumbass” for breaking down in tears during her second-to-last Eras Tour stop in Canada.

The fifth episode of the Disney+ docuseries, “The End of an Era,” which came out Tuesday morning, focused on the significance of Swift’s song about her late grandmother, “Marjorie.”

In one particularly emotional instance after singing the heart-wrenching song to the Toronto crowd, the singer said tearfully, “We’re at very end of this tour and you doing that [cheering] — you have no idea how much it means to me and to …”

However, she had to pause when her emotions got the best of her. And despite trying to continue her speech, she acknowledged between tears, “I don’t even know what I’m saying anymore, I’m just having a bit of a moment, sorry.”

Unable to compose herself, Taylor walked off the stage after telling the crowd, “I love you guys so much!”

After wrapping up the show, the “Lover” singer walked directly into the arms of her mom, Andrea Swift, and her brother, Austin Swift.

In the car, Austin acknowledged that the show “was insane,” which prompted Taylor to say, “That was fun. Ugh, I got emotional. I felt like a dumbass. I couldn’t put words together, Austin, it was kind of embarrassing.”

When her younger brother told her it was “the best part of the whole thing,” she told him, “That was very nice of you to say, you’re a very supportive person. That’s nice of you to say that.”

The Grammy winner then explained that the reason she broke down on stage was that one of her backup singers Kamilah Marshall made a speech before the show about her late mom.

“She was talking about how her mom died recently, and she was just saying how heartbroken she is that her mom never got to see the Eras Tour and never got to see her do this,” she explained.

“And I was just thinking about it all night. And I knew that and we always, likem used to make eye contact on ‘Marjorie’ because of her mom. But it put it in perspective. Like… I don’t know. The fact that mom did get to see it and like Travis [Kelce] got to see it and dad [Scott Swift] got to see it. And I just felt so lucky and it cracked me. It cracked me wide open.”

Andrea, who was riding with Scott in a different car, told Taylor over the phone, “I think you have every right to feel emotional because it has to be hitting you, honey, that this has been the dream tour of your life.”

The 36-year-old recognized, “Yeah. I just never thought we’d ever do something this good. It’s so crazy that all this has happened and we all got to experience it together.”

Earlier in the episode, Andrea spoke about the emotions behind the song, noting, “I said to her, ‘God, Taylor, I don’t know that I can make it through the tour crying every night when you sing that song.’ It just gets me.

“We didn’t know that fans were going to honor that song with the reverence that they do,” she continued of the crowds who hold their phones up as Taylor performs it. “It just became a loving tribute to her grandmother.”

The song became deeply personal for Marshall as well “because it really feels like it’s [her] own experience.”

“The idea that you have a loss and yet they are still here with us is kinda what I need to cling to every night,” Marshall, who has been working with Taylor for 12 years, said in the episode.

In previous episodes, the “Life of a Showgirl” singer opened up about other emotional moments from the Eras Tour, including her breakups from Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy, as well as the aftermath of the 2024 Southport stabbings at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class and the foiled terrorist plot in Vienna.

All six episodes of “The End of an Era” are available to stream on Disney+.
