A British man has been charged with drugging and raping his wife over a 13-year period, and five other men have also been charged with sexually abusing her.
The man, Philip Young, 49, is set to appear in a court in Swindon, in southwest England, on Tuesday on charges against the woman, Joanne Young, who has waived her right to anonymity under British law. A joint statement released by the Crown Prosecution Service and the Wiltshire Police said that Ms. Young, 48, had separated from her husband.
Mr. Young has been charged with committing 56 offenses against her between 2010 and 2023, including 11 counts of rape and “administering a substance with intent to stupefy/overpower to allow sexual activity,” the statement said.
He has also been charged with multiple offenses of sexual assault by penetration, sexual touching, voyeurism, the possession of indecent images of children and extreme pornography, and more than 500 offenses involving publishing or distributing “obscene” material.
Mr. Young lived in the town of Swindon at the time of the offenses but now lives in Enfield, London. He is being held in custody ahead of the hearing on Tuesday at Swindon Magistrates’ Court, the statement said.
Five other men who have also been charged with offenses against Ms. Young as part of the same case will appear in the same court on Tuesday.
Norman Macksoni, 47, from Bedfordshire, England, has been charged with rape and possession of extreme images. Dean Hamilton, 46, of no fixed address, has been charged with rape, sexual assault by penetration and two counts of sexual touching. Conner Sanderson Doyle, 31, of Swindon, has been charged with sexual assault by penetration and sexual touching. Richard Wilkins, 61, of Swindon, has been charged with one count of rape and sexual touching. And Mohammed Hassan, 37, of Swindon, has been charged with sexual touching.
No further details were released by prosecutors. In Britain, strict rules prevent the reporting of anything that could prejudice a jury at trial after charges have been filed.
Detective Superintendent Geoff Smith of the Wiltshire Police said in a statement that the charges had followed “a complex and extensive investigation.”
“The victim in this case, Joanne, has taken the decision to waive her automatic legal right to anonymity,” he added. “She has been supported by specially trained officers from the beginning of the process.”
