Powerball jackpot jumps up to $1.6B — fourth-largest prize in game’s history

The Powerball jackpot soared to a staggering $1.6 billion after Saturday night’s highly anticipated drawing produced no lucky winner, leaving the fourth-largest prize in the lottery game’s history up for grabs.

The winning numbers drawn were 4, 5, 28, 52, 69, and 20 as the Powerball.

The next drawing is on Monday night.

The life-changing fortune has steadily climbed over the past three months, with no one crowned the winner since the last big prize was clinched on Sept. 6.

Saturday’s drawing marked the 45th consecutive run, a record for the most drawings without a jackpot winner, Powerball officials said.

“This jackpot is set to deliver the ultimate windfall,” Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO, said in a statement.

“The jackpot grows with every $2 ticket sold, and a portion of each ticket supports local public programs and services. We encourage everyone to have fun and play responsibly.”

If a lucky ticket holder defies the 1-in-292 million odds of matching all five numbers and the Powerball, they can choose to receive the jackpot in 30 annual payments or take a one-time cash payout.

The lump sum is estimated at $735.3 million before taxes, smaller than the advertised jackpot, which reflects the total annuitized payments.

The largest Powerball grand prize ever claimed was won by 31-year-old Californian Edwin Castro, who took home a $2.04 billion jackpot in November 2022.

Castro went for the $998 million lump sum, and took home about $628 million after taxes, according to the California Lottery.

The last Powerball jackpot was won in September by two tickets that split a $1.787 billion prize — the second-largest US lottery jackpot on record.
