Paris nixes NYE
France surrendered to an invasion of German tanks in 1940; For this New Year’s Eve, it appears that France has chosen to surrender to young brawlers without tanks (“Terrified Paris pulls holiday plug,” Dec. 14).
I wonder if they will permit singing “The Last Time I Saw Paris” in lieu of Christmas carols on the Champs-Élysées.

RIP, Swanny swan
It was very sad and very upsetting to read that Swanny, part of the beloved swan couple at Hallett’s Cove Beach, was nearly stoned to death by some cruel idiot, and had to be euthanized at a wildlife refuge (“NYC murder most fowl,” Dec. 11).
I wish there were laws on the books to incarcerate people for doing such vile deeds.

Slashing at Macy’s
Is there any place in New York City where people are safe (“Macy’s stab horror,” Dec. 14)?
People are getting attacked in the subway, and the same is happening on our streets during the day. A tourist from California was attacked and slashed in the Macy’s department store bathroom.
This deranged person was let out of a psychiatric facility and allowed out on the streets in her mental condition. These doctors in the facilities are letting too many people out onto the streets who are still suffering with mental problems. If this keeps up there will be more of these attacks.
The city and state need to review these facilities and correct the problem before more people get hurt.

Jew-hating ‘man’
Unfortunately we’re once again reminded that women in New York City are rarely in the presence of actual men (“Jew-hate rant at city bar,” Dec. 15).
Sadly, witness Max Towey could stand around watching a woman being attacked, but couldn’t summon the courage to step forward and protect the female Jewish victim. And where were the bartenders? Were no other “men” in the bar where the aforementioned jerk was creating a disturbance?

Happier holidays
It was so great to read Scott Yenor and Jennifer Galardi’s article on the benefits of health, wealth and happiness enjoyed by women who marry and have families (“Happy Holidays,” Postscript, Dec. 14).
For too long, certain forces in our culture have portrayed women who make the most natural choices in the most negative way. Mothers have a strong link to their immediate family and to the next generation.
Yes, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Young people who take their place in this society are blessed.

Boats as houses?
I agree with City Councilwoman Gale Brewer that the SS United States should be saved from the fate of becoming an artificial reef (“NY floats ship rescue,” Dec. 15).
But rather than being reimagined as a historic site, the ship — which once housed over 3,000 passengers and crew — should be refitted as affordable housing. With 520 miles of shoreline, the city could surely create a home for the SS United States, and other ships like her.
I once stayed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Calif. Decommissioned in 1967, the ship has since been a hotel where I happened to enjoy a peaceful sleep during a West Coast earthquake.
