
While tall buildings are concentrated in the larger cities in the US, every state has its own tallest building.
We found the tallest building in each state using data from The Skyscraper Center, a database maintained by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
Here’s how every state (and Washington, DC!) stacks up against each other in terms of height.
51. Wyoming: Wyoming Financial Center, 148 feet

The Wyoming Financial Center, located in Cheyenne, was sold in 2024 to Laramie County for repurposing as a government building, according to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle.
50. South Dakota: The CenturyLink Tower, 174 feet

The CenturyLink Tower in Sioux Falls has just 11 floors.
49. Vermont: Grace Church, 199 feet

This church is located in Rutland.
48. Maine: Saint Joseph’s Church, 235 feet

The congregation is located in Biddeford.
47. North Dakota: North Dakota State Capitol, 242 feet

An urban legend in North Dakota posits that no building in the state can be taller than the 19-story capitol, but there’s no such law.
46. Montana: The First Interstate Center, 272 feet

The 18-story office building is located in the heart of downtown Billings.
45. New Hampshire: City Hall Plaza, 275 feet

Manchester’s City Hall Plaza has 20 floors and 219,700 square feet of space.
44. West Virginia: West Virginia State Capitol, 293 feet

The golden dome of West Virginia’s capitol in Charleston is larger than that of the capitol in Washington, DC.
43. Alaska: The Conoco-Phillips Building, 296 feet

The Conoco-Phillips building is located in downtown Anchorage, Alaska, and is part of a three-building complex. It has 21 floors.
42. Idaho: Eighth & Main, 323 feet tall

Eighth & Main, located in Boise, opened its 18 floors in 2014.
41. Washington, DC: Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 329 feet

It’s the patronal church of the Catholic Church in the US.
40. Mississippi: The Beau Rivage Casino Hotel, 347 feet

The beachfront hotel has 32 floors. It’s located in Biloxi.
39. South Carolina: Capitol Center, 349 feet

Capitol Center has 25 floors and is located across the street from South Carolina’s capitol in Columbia.
38. New Mexico: Albuquerque Plaza, 351 feet

Albuquerque Plaza, also known as the US Eagle Building, has 22 floors.
37. Delaware: 1201 North Market Street, 360 feet

1202 North Market Street, located in Wilmington, has been open since the ’80s. Its 23 floors contain offices.
36. Kansas: The Epic Center, 385 feet

The Epic Center in Wichita has 24 floors and 250,000 square feet.
35. Rhode Island: The Industrial National Bank Building, 428 feet

The building is known as the “Superman Building” to locals due to its resemblance to the Daily Planet, the newspaper where Clark Kent works in the comics.
34. Hawaii: The Central Ala Moana, 435 feet

The Central Ala Moana, located in Honolulu, is a residential building with 43 floors. It was completed in 2021.
33. Utah: Astra Tower, 450 feet

The Astra Tower had its ribbon-cutting ceremony in 2025. The 41-story building is located in downtown Salt Lake City.
32. Arizona: The Chase Tower, 483 feet

The 40-story building sold in May 2018 for $79 million. A few months later, it was sold again for $107 million. It was bought by Vincent Viola, the owner of the Florida Panthers.
Since then, the Phoenix skyscraper has sat empty.
31. Virginia: The Westin Virginia Beach Town Center, 508 feet

The hotel underwent a renovation in 2018 and features an 8,332-square-foot ballroom.
30. Maryland: 100 Light, 529 feet

You might know this building by its unofficial name, the Transamerica Tower. This Baltimore office building has 40 floors.
29. Connecticut: City Place I, 535 feet

City Place I has been the state’s tallest building since the ’80s and has 38 floors.
27 (tie). Arkansas: Simmons Tower, 546 feet

Simmons Tower in Little Rock was built in the ’80s. It has 40 floors.
27 (tie). Oregon: The Wells Fargo Center, 546 feet

Unsurprisingly, the Wells Fargo Center also has 40 floors and “panoramic views of downtown Portland, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, and the Willamette River,” according to its website.
26. Kentucky: 400 West Market, 549 feet

Louisville’s 400 West Market was completed in 1993 and has 35 floors.
25. Wisconsin: The US Bank Center, 601 feet

The 42-story Milwaukee skyscraper won a Distinguished Building Award in 1974 from the American Institute of Architects upon completion.
24. Missouri: One Kansas City Place, 624 feet

One Kansas City Place has 42 stories and 1.3 million square feet of space.
23. Iowa: 801 Grand, 630 feet

Des Moines’ 801 Grand has 44 floors and is 630 feet tall. It also has more than 2,000 steps.
22. Tennessee: AT&T Building, 632 feet tall.

Nashville locals know it as the “Batman Building” due to its striking resemblance to Batman’s mask with the two spires on either side; however, the design was actually supposed to emulate cellphone antennae.
21. Nebraska: The First National Bank Tower, 634 feet tall.

This 46-story building also has two underground tunnels to combat frigid Omaha winters.
20. Louisiana: The Hancock Whitney Center, 697 feet

New Orleans’ Hancock Whitney Center opened under its new name in January 2019. Previously, the 51-story building was known as One Shell Square.
19. Colorado: Republic Plaza, 714 feet

According to Republic Plaza’s website, the building features 56 floors and offers views of Denver and the Rocky Mountains.
18. Michigan: Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, 727 feet

The hotel has 70 floors and 1,298 rooms.
17. Nevada: The Fontainebleau Las Vegas, 735 feet

The Fontainebleau opened in 2023. According to Eater, it took 16 years for the construction to be completed. It has 67 floors and 3,644 rooms.
Stratosphere Tower is technically taller, but according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, freestanding observation towers that are not inhabitable structures are not considered “buildings.”
16. Alabama: The RSA Battle House Tower, 745 feet

The Mobile building has 35 floors and features both office spaces and apartments.
15. Massachusetts: John Hancock Tower, 790 feet

Boston’s John Hancock Tower, also known as 200 Clarendon, depending on who you ask, is the tallest building in New England, reaching a height of 790 feet.
14. Minnesota: The IDS Center, 792 feet tall

The IDS Center has towered over Minneapolis since its completion in 1972, and has 57 floors.
13. Indiana: The Salesforce Tower, 811 feet

The Salesforce Tower is 48 stories tall — and Salesforce itself occupies 12 of them.
12. Oklahoma: Devon Energy Center, 850 feet

The building’s three-sided design “evolved in part from Devon’s desire to not ‘turn its back’ on any part” of Oklahoma City, according to Skyscraper Center.
11. Florida: Panorama Tower, 868 feet

Panorama Tower literally towers over Miami — it has 85 floors.
10. North Carolina: The Bank of America Corporate Center, 871 feet

The Bank of America Corporate Center, located in Charlotte, was constructed in 1992 and stands at 60 stories.
9. New Jersey: 99 Hudson Street, 900 feet tall.

99 Hudson Street took the crown from the Goldman Sachs Tower (a fellow Jersey City building) when its construction topped off in late 2018, at a height of 900 feet. It opened its doors in 2020.
8. Washington: The Columbia Center, 943 feet

The Columbia Center in Seattle is home to the Skyview Observatory on the 73rd floor of the building, making it the highest observatory deck in the Pacific Northwest.
7. Ohio: Key Tower, 947 feet

Key Tower has 57 floors and is attached to the Cleveland Marriott Downtown.
6. Texas: The JPMorgan Chase Tower, 1,002 feet

The Houston building has 75 floors and is the tallest five-sided building in the world, per its website.
5. Georgia: Bank of America Plaza, 1,023 feet

The tallest building in Georgia is located in Atlanta and has 55 stories and 1.3 million square feet of space.
4. California: The Wilshire Grand Center, 1,100 feet

The 73-floor skyscraper is home to the Hotel InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
3. Pennsylvania: The Comcast Technology Center, 1,121 feet

The 60-story Comcast Technology Center was Philadelphia’s first “supertall” building, which is defined as anything above 1,000 feet, according to Curbed.
2. Illinois: Willis Tower, 1,451 feet

It’s 1,730 feet tall, including the building’s antennae.
While it might technically be called Willis Tower, both Chicago locals and tourists alike can agree that this 110-floor building will always be the Sears Tower in our hearts.
1. New York: One World Trade Center, 1,776 feet

America’s tallest building, New York City’s One World Trade Center (also known as the Freedom Tower), is intentionally 1,776 feet tall to honor the year the United States was founded.
