3 Days After Deadly Brown Shooting, Killer and Motive Remain a Mystery

More than three days after a fatal shooting at Brown University, officials in Rhode Island released additional video of the man they believe carried out the deadly attack. But they appeared no closer to determining the killer’s name, motive or whereabouts.

“We don’t yet know who we’re looking for,” Peter F. Neronha, the state’s attorney general, said in a Tuesday evening news conference.

The new video shared by law enforcement agencies included a timeline of a man in a dark coat and face mask circulating in neighborhoods close to campus. His face remained covered in all of the images, making him difficult to identify.

“Focus on the body movements, the way the person moved their arms, the body posture, the way they carry the weight,” Col. Oscar Perez, chief of the Providence, R.I., police department, said. “I think those are important movement patterns that may help you identify this individual.”

The possible shooter was captured on video walking through a neighborhood just off campus as early as 10:30 a.m. on the morning of the shooting, which happened around 4 p.m. on Saturday in an engineering building on campus. Two students were killed, nine others were wounded.

“We believe he was actually casing out this area, which is something that criminals do,” Chief Perez said. He asked residents to look back at least a week for possible images of the suspect, hoping he might have visited the community before the shooting and revealed his face.

The F.B.I. shared a similar compilation of video footage, much of it from home security cameras near the campus. The images showed a man walking, loitering and sometimes running along residential streets, both before and shortly after the shooting. In some parts of the footage, the man was carrying a satchel. In others, he was not.

Despite the lack of concrete leads, officials continued to express confidence that they would eventually get their man, offering assurances of safety to the nervous Providence community and anyone remaining on the nearly empty Brown campus. In the wake of the shooting, finals were canceled, and students have mainly cleared out for the winter holidays.

“Once we identify who this person is, I believe we’ll be able to locate him,” Mr. Neronha said. “It’s very hard to hide in this country.”

The building where the shooting occurred, Barus and Holley, was renovated within the past few years, officials said. The gunman attacked a classroom in the older section, where there are fewer cameras, and none of them captured the attack or the suspected gunman, officials said.

“The building is on the edge of the Brown campus. Where the shooting took place is at the edge of that building,” Mr. Neronha said. He added, “There is no footage that depicts this individual, that would be useful in identifying him, that we have not released to you.”

Law enforcement officials have not indicated that they believe anyone other than the gunman was involved in the attack, which occurred during a review session for an economics final.

A young man described by the authorities as a “person of interest” was detained for most of the day Sunday but was later released. Officials said they had determined that the man was not connected to the crime.

Family and friends continued to mourn the two Brown students killed in the attack. MukhammadAziz Umurzokov was an 18-year-old from Virginia whose family immigrated to the United States from Uzbekistan in 2011. Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore from Alabama, was a talented pianist and the vice president of the university’s Republican Club.

Chief Perez said in response to a reporter’s question that investigators had no evidence at this point that Ms. Cook was targeted by the gunman, despite speculation in some right-wing circles.

Brown has not named the nine students who were wounded. But according to the University’s health department, two have been released from the hospital, and most of the remainder are in critical but stable condition.
