In a bombshell interview with Vanity Fair, Donald Trump’s Chief of Staff Susie Wiles launched pointed criticisms at billionaire Elon Musk, among other Trump administration figures.
Wiles, tasked with overseeing Trump’s presidential campaign and subsequently managing the White House, made unusually frank observations during her conversation with author Chris Whipple. While she directed criticism toward Vice President JD Vance, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, she reserved her sharpest comments for Musk, who was once a regular presence in the Oval Office before his relationship with Trump deteriorated.
According to the New York Times’ Peter Baker, Wiles characterized Musk’s behavior as irrational, brought up his drug use, and described being forced to confront him about the Department of Government Efficiency’s mass firing campaign. Baker reported, “Ms. Wiles described frustration with Mr. Musk, the billionaire who early in the year was empowered to eviscerate federal agencies and fire employees en masse with almost no process,” noting Wiles complained, “He’s an odd, odd duck, as I think geniuses are. You know, it’s not helpful, but he is his own person.”
Wiles referenced a Musk post on X defending Stalin, Mao, and Hitler, observing, “I think that’s when he’s microdosing,” and stating, “he’s an avowed ketamine [user].”
During a subsequent interview with the Times, Wiles initially denied making the drug abuse statement, claiming, “That’s ridiculous. I wouldn’t have said it and I wouldn’t know.” However, Whipple produced the tape confirming her remarks.
Regarding DOGE’s dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development, Wiles expressed dismay: “I was initially aghast because I think anybody that pays attention to government and has ever paid attention to U.S.A.I.D. believed, as I did, that they do very good work.”
Wiles recalled confronting Musk about his methods, telling him, “You can’t just lock people out of their offices.” She acknowledged that while his approach differed from hers, she conceded, “But no rational person could think the U.S.A.I.D. process was a good one. Nobody.”
