The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released shortlists in 12 categories on Tuesday, and “Sinners,” Ryan Coogler’s tale of vampires in the Jim Crow South, and “Wicked: For Good,” the follow-up to last year’s smash, both made strong showings, appearing in eight of the categories, including the new casting one.
“One Battle After Another,” the Paul Thomas Anderson epic considered a front-runner, made it into five categories, while international films like “The Secret Agent” and “Sentimental Value” also did well.
The shortlist for the inaugural casting Oscar shed some light on whether that category will default to best-picture front-runners or go in a unique direction. Most of the films that made the lineup were indeed major Oscar contenders like “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme” and “Sentimental Value,” but there were two gratifyingly unexpected inclusions in the horror hit “Weapons” and the raver survivalist odyssey “Sirat,” the latter of which features a cast made up almost entirely of nonprofessional actors.
Surprising snubs in this early round of shortlists include “The Testament of Ann Lee,” a Shaker musical that failed to make both the song and score lineups. None of the three Marvel Studios films released this year — “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts” and “The Fantastic Four” — made the visual-effects shortlist. And though “Weapons” made the casting list, it was left off the shortlist for hairstyling and makeup. (Aunt Gladys surely won’t like that.)
The Oscars will be handed out on March 15. Here is a look at some of the key categories. For the complete list, go to Oscars.org.
