Rob Reiner’s son Nick was “in a really good place” three months before allegedly murdering his parents.
The director spoke to NPR in September about his 32-year-old being more than six years clean from drugs while promoting the “Spinal Tap” sequel.
The “All in the Family” alum, who was slain on Sunday at age 78, insisted to the outlet that Nick had “been [doing] great.”

During the interview, Rob reflected on collaborating with Nick on “Being Charlie,” the semi-autobiographical 2016 movie portraying Nick’s addiction battle.
The Emmy winner compared himself to the father character in the film, played by Cary Elwes, and explained that he was “never, ever too busy” for Nick.
Instead, Rob admitted, “I mean, if anything, I was the other way. You know, I was more hands-on and trying to do whatever I thought I could do to help.”

He acknowledged that he “made mistakes” and has “talked [to Nick] about that since.”
That same month, Nick joined his father — as well as mom Michele and siblings Jake and Romy — at the “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” premiere.
He also accompanied his parents to Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday, hours before Rob and Michele were stabbed to death in their Brentwood, Calif., home.

Not only did the couple get into a “very loud argument” with their child, according to TMZ, but People reported Nick was “freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.”
A source told NBC News Tuesday that Nick “stormed off” after interrupting comedian Bill Hader’s conversation.
Jane Fonda, who was also a guest at the holiday bash, wrote via Instagram on Monday that Rob looked “happy and healthy” on his final night alive.

His and Michele’s bodies were found by daughter Romy on Sunday, and Nick was subsequently arrested on charges of murder.
Before being detained, Nick checked into the Pierside Santa Monica hotel — and left behind a grisly scene, from a blood-filled bath to bloodstained bedsheets.
He is currently on suicide watch and being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
Although Nick was set to be arraigned on Tuesday, the suspect missed the court appearance as he wasn’t medically cleared to be “transferred to court,” per lawyer Alan Jackson.

Nick’s addiction struggles began in his teens, and he spent years homeless and in and out of rehab.
In a chilling comment during a 2015 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rob looked back on the “very hard” times for their family.
“The number one job of any parent is to keep their child safe. And I hadn’t done that,” the actor said at the time. “And now here I have done that. I kept him safe. He came out alive.”
