A scandal-plagued pro-Trump lawmaker was at a political event in New York City over the weekend that was also attended by a number of prominent white nationalists and Nazi sympathizers, according to Politico.
Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) was given a prime speaking role at the New York Young Republican Club gala, held on Saturday.
“Inside Cipriani Wall Street, amid the sea of tuxedos and ball gowns, was white nationalist leader Jared Taylor. Across the room sat EmpathChan, an influencer who went viral recently for wearing blackface on Halloween. And appearing on stage was Markus Frohnmaier, a far-right German politician, whose political party the club had cheered with a German-language phrase popularized by the Nazis,” reported Jason Beeferman and Caroline McCarthy. “Also spotted at the New York Young Republican Club gala: Vish Burra, a club member who lost his job at the conservative One America News Network last month for posting a video depicting Jews as cockroaches.”
Ogles himself pushed extreme anti-immigrant fervor when it was time for him to speak, reiterating his call to deport New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
“If dubiously elected or rather naturalized illegal immigrants are polluting our politics, the new right must have courage to deport them,” Ogles said.
The New York Young Republican Club was sent reeling by scandal earlier this year after an explosive report showing a trove of racist, misogynistic, and hate-filled text communications by members of the group. Some people in the chats praised Hitler, called Black Americans “watermelon people,” and fantasized about raping political opponents.
The reporting triggered the resignation of a number of GOP staffers, as well as one state senator in Vermont, who were involved with the chats.
Ogles, who represents a heavily gerrymandered district including portions of Nashville, has frequently been mired in his own controversies, including financial discrepancies with his campaign and an allegation that he pocketed $25,000 in crowdfunding to build a memorial for his stillborn son. He also drew outrage for suggesting the right way to handle Palestinians in Gaza would be to “kill ’em all.”
