Rob Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, was arrested on a murder charge in connection with the deaths of his legendary Hollywood director father and his mother, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman told Business Insider on Monday.
Online records from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department show that the younger 32-year-old Reiner was taken into custody and was being held on $4 million bail.
It was not immediately clear whether he had retained an attorney.
Nick Reiner’s parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their home in Brentwood on Sunday. The LAPD has said that it is investigating the deaths of the 78-year-old award-winning director-actor and his 68-year-old wife as an apparent homicide.
An LAPD spokesperson previously told Business Insider that at 3:38 p.m. on Sunday, the department received a medical aid call to the 200 Block of Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood, Los Angeles.
The Associated Press, citing a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation, reported that the couple suffered stab wounds.
Rob Reiner was the director of notable Hollywood classics like “The Princess Bride,” When Harry Met Sally,” and “A Few Good Men.”
The famed director’s career took off, thanks to his acting role in the 1970s sitcom, “All in the Family.” He later appeared alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film, “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
Rob Reiner also directed “Being Charlie,” a movie about an addict that his son, Nick Reiner, cowrote.
As Business Insider reported in 2016, the movie was largely based on the younger Reiner’s own life and struggle with drug addiction.
“I relied on him,” Rob Reiner said of his son in an interview with Business Insider about the movie. “He’s the heart and soul of the film.”
Nick Reiner, who had battled drug abuse in his teen years, called the making of the movie “a real corrective emotional experience” during the interview, following the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
“It needed what he has been through but also what we had been through,” Rob Reiner told Business Insider at the time.
In a 2016 interview with People magazine, Nick Reiner told the magazine he was sent off to his first rehab stay around his 15th birthday. He also spoke of his experience with homelessness.
“I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas,” Nick Reiner told People. “I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.”
He added, “When I was out there, I could’ve died. It’s all luck. You roll the dice and you hope you make it.”
