Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have been threatened with contempt proceedings by Rep. James Comer (R-KY) over the duo’s failure to appear to testify in the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking investigation.
Comer, chair of the House Oversight Committee, issued the sternly worded threat on Friday ahead of planned depositions scheduled for Wednesday.
“It has been more than four months since Bill and Hillary Clinton were subpoenaed to sit for depositions related to our investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s horrific crimes. Throughout that time, the former President and former Secretary of State have delayed, obstructed, and largely ignored the Committee staff’s efforts to schedule their testimony,” Comer said. “If the Clintons fail to appear for their depositions next week or schedule a date for early January, the Oversight Committee will begin contempt of Congress proceedings to hold them accountable.”
The Clintons could face jail time if they’re held in contempt of Congress for defying the subpoena.
The threat comes after the Federal Law Enforcement Subcommittee voted in July to issue subpoenas to 10 people, including the Clintons, for testimony in the child sex trafficking investigation. Comer issued the subpoenas in August.
The Oversight Committee has framed the subpoenas as necessary to obtain testimony about what the Clintons knew about Epstein, their contacts or travel with him, and any information they might have about his activities and federal investigations into him.
Bill Clinton appears in Epstein’s flight logs and related documents from Epstein’s cases. Documents showed he traveled on Epstein’s private jet, known as the “Lolita Express,” multiple times between 2001 and 2003, often for Clinton Foundation-related trips to places like Africa, Europe, and Asia.
