CNN’s Jake Tapper mocked President Donald Trump’s off-script speech about affordability from Tuesday, calling it a “wild weave” that seemed to show the president doesn’t understand why so many Americans are concerned about the cost of living.
Trump spoke to an audience in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, a blue-collar swing district in the northeastern part of the state. The speech was billed to be about affordability, but Trump told the audience he was going to “weave” through other topics, as he often does.
“If I read everything that’s on this teleprompter, you’d all be asleep by now,” Trump said during the speech.
There were a few moments in particular that piqued Tapper’s interest, and he played clips of them during the Wednesday broadcast of his show on CNN, “The Lead.”
At one point, Trump advised parents in the crowd that they could give up certain products, like pencils and dolls, for their children.
“You don’t need 37 dolls for your daughter,” Trump said. “Two or three is nice, but you don’t need 37 dolls.”
“No dolls for you!” Tapper said after the clip played, shaking his head. “President Trump seems to have a difficult time understanding that people out there are hurting.”
