Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem’s appearance before the House Homeland Security Committee on Thursday morning is billed as a discussion about global threats the United States faces, but much of the focus is expected to be on her role in the Trump administration’s immigration policies. In addition to overseeing the president’s mass deportation campaign, the former South Dakota governor has also faced blowback from critics for the agency’s plane purchases. Under Noem, DHS spent $200 million on two new Gulfstream jets to be used by her and other top DHS and Coast Guard officials. More recently, DHS signed a $140 million contract for six Boeing 737s to carry out deportations, using money allocated by Congress in the GOP tax and immigration bill.
