‘Betrayal’: Republicans tee off on GOP colleagues over ‘broken promises’ with defense bill

The MAGA movement appeared to split on Wednesday night after the House of Representatives voted to pass the National Defense Authorization Act, a more than $900 billion military spending package.

The NDAA is one of the largest single-spending bills Congress passes each session. The latest version of the bill includes a provision that allocates around $800 million to Ukraine’s war against Russia and language that could force the Department of Defense to release the video of a hotly-contested strike against an alleged drug boat on Sept. 2.

The NDAA passed the House of Representatives 312-112, with 94 Democrats and 18 Republicans voting against it, according to The Hill.

MAGA Republicans, including Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), praised the bill for its investments in “strengthening the military.”

“We secured pay raises, better housing, childcare, and improved medical access for our troops, along with investments in cutting-edge technology and strategic deterrence,” Lawler posted on X.

But some hard-line Republicans argued the bill was full of “woke, pork-stuffed” provisions.

“Conservatives were promised—explicitly—that strong anti-Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) language would be included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA),” Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) posted on X. “That promise was broken.”

“We must demand better—and fight on in the next must-pass bill to ensure a CBDC never sees the light of day,” he added. “Financial freedom isn’t negotiable.”

“I was proud to support the NDAA when it passed the House earlier this year, but I’m voting NO on the garbage bill on the floor today,” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) posted on X. “The House passed a strong bill. What’s coming back is a woke, pork-stuffed betrayal of our troops and our country.”

“The bill even keeps DEI policies in our Intel community after we voted to remove them in committee!” Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) posted on X. “Republicans were elected to put America First. It is time we act like it.”
