A pro-life group on Tuesday demanded the removal of Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary, arguing that the agency’s abortion pill review has been delayed over concerns about the upcoming midterm elections.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, alleged that Makary is “severely undermining” the Trump administration and its “pro-life agenda” by pushing back a mifepristone study, The Washington Times reported.
Dannenfelser was reportedly reacting to a Bloomberg report that indicated Makary had requested behind-the-scenes to put the study off until after November 2026.
“Enough is enough: FDA Commissioner Makary should be fired immediately,” Dannenfelser said in a statement. “The FDA is doing nothing while every single day abortion drugs take the lives of children, put women and girls at serious risk, empower abusers and trample state pro-life laws.”
The Trump administration has claimed that the study was underway.
The White House responded to the allegations against Makary on Tuesday in a statement from White House Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai:
“FDA Commissioner Marty Makary is working diligently to ensure that Americans have the best possible, Gold Standard Science study of mifepristone. The White House maintains the utmost confidence in Commissioner Makary, whose leadership at the FDA has delivered and continues to deliver one landmark victory for the American people after another, from cracking down on artificial ingredients in our food supply to conducting the first safety review of baby formula in decades.”
“Uninformed attacks against Commissioner Makary from individuals outside the Administration will not change these facts,” Desai added.
