Rising Dem star files paperwork to run for Senate: report

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) filed paperwork Monday to enter the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in the Lone Star state, according to CBS News, just hours before a planned announcement and ahead of the state’s 6 p.m. primary filing deadline.

Crockett will compete against state Rep. James Talarico (D-TX), whose campaign has generated national attention and raised a record-topping $6.2 million in its first three weeks. The Republican side features incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt in a closely-watched primary battle.

Crockett’s entry comes amid former Rep. Colin Allred’s decision to withdraw from the race on Monday. Rather than pursue the Senate seat, Allred filed to run for the newly-drawn 33rd Congressional District in Dallas County. The Supreme Court recently approved redrawn congressional maps backed by President Donald Trump for the 2026 election, which redefined three Dallas-area districts previously represented by Democrats.

In his statement, Allred said, “In the past few days, I’ve come to believe that a bruising Senate Democratic primary and runoff would prevent the Democratic Party from going into this critical election unified against the danger posed to our communities and our Constitution by Donald Trump and one of his Republican bootlickers Paxton, Cornyn, or Hunt. That’s why I’ve made the difficult decision to end my campaign for the U.S. Senate. But I’m nowhere near done serving my community and our state. Today, I’m announcing my campaign for Congress to represent the newly drawn Congressional District 33.”

Crockett has said she would only run for Senate if internal polling showed she could win the general election.

Crockett’s Senate run means she will vacate the 30th Congressional District, which she has represented since 2023. Democratic Rep. Marc Veasey of Fort Worth will file for the newly-drawn 30th District.
