Rockville, Md., townhouses built on site of former law enforcement center

At the Grove, a new townhouse community from local builder Wormald Homes, the streets tell a story. Dispatch Street, Swat Street and Medical Center Drive intersect with Dalmatian Street, all reminders of the firefighters and law enforcement officers who trained and ran drills on the site — formerly Montgomery County’s Public Safety Training Academy.

“We tried to pay homage to their presence on the property,” said Ken Wormald, managing partner at Wormald Homes.

The Grove, which will ultimately include 40 luxury townhouses within a larger development, comes with upscale design details, including Wormald’s signature rooftop-level “four seasons retreat” for entertaining and optional elevators in some floor plans. The houses, Wormald said, also make creative use of light and a natural color palette to create a contemporary feel.

He cited details like stacked natural stone, warm wood tones, use of tall glass and “light boxes,” or architectural forms around windows, as elements that make the homes more edgy and exciting.

“Our sort of place in the universe, or in the food chain of real estate, is to create more edge — innovative products that cater to people that are more architecture-driven rather than space and square-footage driven,” Wormald said.

The Amari accounts for 20 of the development’s planned houses, Wormald said. At 2,800 square feet and four levels, it includes a number of uncommon or creatively apportioned spaces. The ground-floor studio level includes a two-car garage, covered porch and entrance gallery, along with a home office space with optional sliding glass doors.

The main level, with an open-plan pass-through from the dining room to a large kitchen with a breakfast bar island and on to a great room with a gas fireplace, also includes another signature Wormald feature: a lanai, or covered balcony, with ample space for seating and grilling at the rear of the home.

The upper level has three bedrooms, including the primary suite, which has two walk-in closets and an en suite bathroom with a two-sink vanity.

The loft level is designed for relaxation and entertainment, with the four seasons retreat — a seating area surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows — at the center, with an open “sky terrace” at the rear of the home and a covered lounge terrace with optional skylights at the front. This level, Wormald said, is designed so it can turn into a single open-plan screened-in porch for parties or work from home. The company introduced the design concept in its Quarry Springs development in Bethesda, he said, and has found it to be one of its most popular features and a top selling point.

There will be 18 residences with the Darcy floor plan. It has identical square footage to the Amari and similar spaces, but it offers an optional elevator serving all four levels. Other options include a loft bedroom in place of the four seasons retreat at the roof level.

Two units will have the Kadence floor plan, with the features of the Amari and the Darcy, but with stairs at the front of the home rather than at the center.

All styles have Bosch or Thermador chef-style kitchen appliances. Residents have access to a clubhouse with a fitness center and outdoor pool, walking trails, bike path, dog park and playground.

Wormald said he’s seen a wide span of buyers interested in the community, from professionals who appreciate the Rockville location’s convenient proximity to the Interstate 270 Technology Corridor and Shady Grove medical campus to empty-nesters who like the ease of elevators.

The Grove marked its grand opening in September 2024 and has sold 16 units to date, said sales manager Candice Grams. With construction still ongoing, the company aims to have all houses completed and sold by the end of next year, she said.

Public schools: Stone Mill Elementary; Cabin John Middle; Thomas S. Wootton High

Transportation: The Shady Grove Metro Station, serving the Red Line, is about four miles from the Grove. Montgomery County bus lines stop along Great Seneca Highway and Darnestown Road, which border the community.
