Trump’s ultimatum for Maduro: Letters to the Editor — Dec. 3, 2025

The Issue: President Trump telling Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro to resign or face military action.

While President Trump has justifiably pursued criminal drug traffickers from Venezuela, Democrats have protested the legality of military action, despite similar military interventions by former President Barack Obama and others against ISIS and the Taliban (“Don: clock is ticking, Nic,”Dec. 1).

Unfortunately, many Americans appear more concerned with domestic economic issues than foreign policy successes.

Our president’s threats to Nicolás Maduro are an abuse of power and governmental overreach.

Congress needs to step in immediately and prevent further escalation.

Also, what’s preventing Trump from forcing a regime change in Russia and China, whose leaders make Maduro look like a choir boy?

If I were Maduro, I’d tell Trump I wouldn’t step down until he forces Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping to step down first.

J.J. Crovatto

Trump is doing the right thing by blowing up drug boats on the way to this country.

People who disagree are saying it’s OK to bring drugs into this country to kill our citizens.

I think we need to develop a pill for common sense.

The “peace” president, has effectively declared war on Venezuela.

He has threatened a no-fly zone and a “boots on the ground” invasion.

Trump’s taking full advantage of the basic rule of life: You can do whatever you want until someone stops you.

Congress, whose job is to contain the president, has neglected its duty and unleashed a monster.

Austin Kuder

Maduro’s a dictator who’s destroying both his own country and our own with drugs.

He’s poisoning our youth and his egregious actions must stop.

Trump will do this by destroying boats that are carrying drugs and, hopefully, inciting a change of regime in Venezuela, bringing back democracy and freeing Venezuelans.

Let freedom ring!

Frederick Bedell Jr.

Bellerose

While I agree with most of what was said in the recent editorial, I keep hearing that hit song of a bygone era, “Weapons of Mass Destruction” (“Maduro Must Go,” Editorial, Dec. 1).

Let’s pray that if Trump goes through with military action, he will have all his ducks lined up in the proper fashion.

The Issue: The Affordable Care Act’s ongoing negative impact on health-care costs.

Obamacare is the federal government’s one-size-fits-all strategy that’s led to rising premiums and growing uncertainty in the health-care market (“Obamacare Crashing,” Editorial, Nov. 30).

Now, we need state-based solutions to address the health-insurance concerns.

Before Obamacare, Wisconsin had a robust program — Health Insurance Risk Sharing Plan — which provided health insurance to people with pre-existing conditions who were denied coverage by insurance companies.

When Obamacare was implemented, the program was eliminated and thousands of people lost insurance coverage.

It is time to give states the power to design health insurance plans for their specific populations again.

Tawsif Anam

Madison, Wisc.

The inevitable failure of Obamacare was a feature, not a bug.

The program was designed to collapse and leave “tens of millions of Americans in the lurch,” to allow for a future Democrat cavalry to ride in and save the day with socialized medicine.

This was the ultimate goal.
