Mostly rain is predicted for the storm system forecast to sweep through the D.C. area on Tuesday. But enough cold air may linger for a period of frozen precipitation early in the morning. That could result in some school delays, mainly in the far northern and western parts of the region.
The Capital Weather Gang is forecasting the possibility of slick roads from a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain for western Loudoun, northern Fauquier, northern Carroll and Frederick (Md.) counties (as well as areas farther to the north and west) in the early to midmorning hours. These areas are under a winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service. The wintry mix could expand as far east as northern Montgomery and western Fairfax counties but will probably quickly be washed away by rain.

The possibility of slick roads and sidewalks may motivate some school systems in these colder areas to delay opening two hours. Closings are less likely. But, given this is the first bout of wintry weather, the systems may be extra cautions.
We do not anticipate disruptions to school operations near Interstate 95 and to the east, where most, if not all, precipitation will fall as rain.

Because disruptive wintry weather is not expected in the Beltway area, we think it’s unlikely the Office of Personnel Management will alter operations.
