Scratch-off lotto player wins $1M after unlucky sap leaves it on store counter

Finders, keepers.

A 33-year-old Michigan man offered to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket left behind by another patron at a Detroit convenience store — and hit a $1 million jackpot.

The lucky winner, who opted to remain anonymous, saw that another customer passed on paying for a $10 Blazing Suits drawing last week and to decided take his chances, the Michigan Lottery said in a news release.

“I scratched the ticket off and couldn’t believe it when I saw it was a $1 million winner,” he said in the release. “I never would have thought I’d win such a large lottery prize, so it’s truly a blessing.”

Lottery officials said he chose to take a lump sum payment of about $693,000 instead of yearly payouts.

The Wolverine State lottery, like other states, donates proceeds of games of chance to its Department of Education, and last year contributed more than $1 billion to school aid.

Meanwhile, the anonymous winner still has a problem on his hands.

“Winning is a great feeling,” he said. “But it’s also a lot of pressure because your mind starts thinking of all the different things you can do with this amount of money.”

No sign of the unlucky sap who balked at plopping down $10 for the winning ticket.
