It was a move that did not draw much attention. On Aug. 20, the Jets traded for defensive tackle Jowon Briggs. The Jets sent a sixth-round pick to the Browns for Briggs and a seventh-round pick.
Though the move did not move the needle in the summer, it has been a positive for the Jets this fall. Briggs has been a pleasant surprise and is a starter on the Jets’ defense now that Quinnen Williams is in Dallas.

“I thought that was a really good move by our scouting department to bring somebody like that in,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said. “He’s a big man, he’s strong. Again, he’s able to stop the run because he’s been doing a good job of that, but what’s been surprising, and I wouldn’t say surprising, but what he’s had the tick up in is his ability to rush the passer also.
“So, we want to be able to utilize that. I’m not saying that he’s Mean Joe Greene or anything like that, but listen, he’s been doing a really good job of being disruptive in the pass game also.”
Briggs is tied with Jermaine Johnson II for second on the team in sacks with three.
He got Lamar Jackson once last week and has been a key piece in the improved run defense by the Jets recently.

“We knew, particularly coach [Eric] Washington, of his skill set,” Jets defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said. “I think, in a matter of time, we’re starting to see exactly what we envisioned. He can really create some one-on-ones and dominate, which you saw last week, getting a sack, collapsing the pocket, and getting that sack.

“He’s playing great ball. I think him and Harrison [Phillips] both are just being really solid inside, which has given us the opportunity to perform well on the outside.”
The Jets downgraded CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr. (hip) to doubtful for Sunday’s game.
They added WR Allen Lazard (neck) to the injury report and listed him as questionable. … They elevated DB Jordan Clark and DE Eric Watts from the practice squad.
