‘Not going to be a recovery’: Father of National Guard member confirms ‘mortal wound’

The father of a member of the West Virginia National Guard confirmed that his daughter had suffered a “mortal wound” during a Wednesday shooting in Washington, D.C.

On Thursday, officials identified the two wounded service members as U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, and U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20.

According to The New York Times, Wolfe began his service with the Force Support Squadron, 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard on Feb. 5, 2019. Beckstrom’s service began June 6, 2023, with her assignment to the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade of the West Virginia Army National Guard.

Both members had been serving in Washington, D.C., since August as a part of President Donald Trump’s so-called crackdown on crime.

Specialist Beckstrom’s father told the Times that his daughter would likely not recover from her injuries.

“I’m holding her hand right now,” Gary Beckstrom explained in a phone interview. “She has a mortal wound. It’s not going to be a recovery.”

A man at Wolfe’s family home asked for “prayers for my son.”
