CAROLINA, Puerto Rico — Kaylene Smikle scored 22 points, Yarden Garzon added 17, and No. 7 Maryland held off No. 16 Kentucky, 74-66, in a matchup of unbeaten teams Wednesday night at the Discover Puerto Rico Classic.
The Terrapins (8-0) built a 20-point lead midway through the third quarter before Kentucky (7-1) rallied. Tonie Morgan’s layup with 48 seconds left in the game cut the Wildcats’ deficit to 70-64. Saylor Poffenbarger and Addi Mack each made two free throws in the final seconds to secure Maryland’s win.
Mack finished with 15 points and Poffenbarger had 12 for Maryland. Smikle was 9 for 11 from the free throw line, where the Terps made their first 17 and finished 21 for 23. Garzon was 5 for 10 from three-point range as Maryland improved to 8-0 for the eighth time under Coach Brenda Frese.

Morgan had 22 points and eight assists for Kentucky, which was 6 for 8 from the line and committed 20 turnovers. Asia Boone added 13 points.
Maryland took control early, scoring 10 straight points after the Wildcats opened the game with a pair of free throws. The lead reached 11 points and was 21-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Terps led 39-28 at halftime, helped by 11-for-11 shooting from the line. Maryland stretched its lead to 55-35 in the third quarter on Poffenbarger’s three-pointer before Kentucky rallied.
The Terps face Hofstra at 3 p.m. Thursday.
