Alex Ovechkin will be honored Wednesday night at Capital One Arena for his latest milestones — reaching 900 goals and 1,500 games earlier this season.
The ceremony, which will be held before the Washington Capitals host the Winnipeg Jets, is the latest celebration of Ovechkin, who has filled a 21-year NHL career with a lengthy list of extraordinary moments.
“Obviously, it feels pretty special,” he said Wednesday morning. “Special moment. No one in history has done it. To be the first guy to score 900, it’s a pretty special moment.”
After a slow start to the season, Ovechkin has 10 goals in 23 games. He notched the 33rd regular season hat trick of his career Thursday in Montreal.
“He’s in one of those runs where pucks are going in for him,” Coach Spencer Carbery said. “When that happens, you can feel his confidence. Now, like, all he needs is one [chance] tonight, where at the beginning of the year he needed four or five. Now, he gets one in the slot and you’re like, ‘That’s going in tonight, for sure.’”

Charlie Lindgren is slated to be the Capitals’ starting goaltender against the Jets. His most recent appearance came Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning, when he entered late in the first period after Logan Thompson was pulled.
“I think that’s just the way that we mapped it out. We looked at this homestand before we head out to California and how we wanted it to play out,” Carbery said. “We just felt like LT going back and playing last game against Columbus after the Tampa game was important, so [we] thought this game for Chuckie.”
The Capitals placed center Nic Dowd on injured reserve and recalled forward Bogdan Trineyev from Hershey of the American Hockey League; Washington didn’t have an extra healthy forward on its roster. Dowd appeared frustrated as he left the morning skate earlier in Wednesday; he has missed the past four games with an upper-body injury.
Dylan McIlrath is set to draw into the lineup and replace Declan Chisholm on a defensive pair with Rasmus Sandin.
