In yet another sign that Donald Trump is losing control over his caucus, the White House had to pull the plug this week on a major announcement of the president’s health care proposals because a handful of House Republicans drew a line in the sand and let him know it was a non-starter with them.
According to leaks about Trump’s plan, he was willing to extend a substantial amount of the Affordable Care Act provisions with some changes to eligibility requirements and premium increases.
With hard-right Republicans making it clear they want to kill off the ACA entirely, the White House backed off to regroup.
According to MS NOW host Jonathan Lemire, the last-second cancellation of the press availability was yet another blow to Trump’s reputation as a deal maker and an unstoppable force within his party.
“Republicans in the House, they want nothing to do with the Affordable Care Act,” the “Morning Joe” co-host said of the reluctant GOP lawmakers.
“Trump himself, though he does — he’s made it clear — understands the need to address some of these rising costs,” he added before pointing out, “We know how he feels about anything attached to Barack Obama. The Affordable Care Act is something he would love to undo if he could, but he seems pretty stuck.”
“So there is a tension point here, and we have seen the last few weeks over the [Jeffrey] Epstein matter,” he noted before adding, “In the wake of the elections. Republicans are just starting to be willing to defy President Trump. Let’s not overstate it, but it has been happening, you know, now and then. And they did it this week; the White House was going to put out its own health care plan this week and the House said ‘no,’ and they had to pull it down.”
“Pretty embarrassing move for the West Wing that they had to do that, so we don’t know what’s next,” Lemire admitted.
