President Donald Trump’s sinking numbers are a flashing warning sign for Republican prospects in upcoming elections, former GOP strategist Rick Wilson wrote on his Substack on Tuesday.
“Right before Thanksgiving 2025, the supposedly unstoppable MAGA juggernaut looks less like a war machine and more like a rusted-out carnival ride at the county fair with sparks coming off the axles and the carnies looking for a better gig,” wrote Wilson, a frequent and ruthless critic of the Trump administration. “This is Trump’s losing streak, and the GOP is paying the price.”
“It’s not just that he’s a bad week here or there. It’s not as if he’s had one bad headline or a few policy or political hiccups,” he continued. “It’s a pattern. A slow-motion plane crash. A slide. A cold realization spreading through Republican donor suites and MAGA group chats alike: the man who promised domination is delivering a string of defeats, walk-backs, failures, fuckups, and humiliations.”
The number of Trump’s failures in recent weeks is endless, Wilson continued, from his epic drubbing in the November elections, to the failure of his tariffs to juice the economy, to his DOGE government-cutting initiative quietly being scrapped with no notable accomplishments, to the dismissal of his prosecutions against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
And throughout all this, Wilson noted, is Trump’s visible signs of aging: “Nobody needs to play amateur neurologist to notice Trump sounding more strained, more repetitive, more erratic. Concerns about his age and cognitive decline have climbed steadily since January. He’s old, sick, and weak. Trump’s political brand is dominance. The more he looks diminished, the more the entire cult of personality starts to wobble.”
This should be a “five-alarm fire” for the GOP, Wilson wrote, because they’re all at risk of going down with the ship — and it’s already happening.
“The movement that demands loyalty is eating itself. The Musk-Trump blowup alone was a bright flare of elite MAGA civil war, with Vance awkwardly trying to glue the pieces back together,” Trump wrote. “MTG fleeing Congress is the latest explosion, and more will follow. Influencers are feuding, grifters are accusing other grifters of being secret globalists, and the base is exhausted from constant purity tests.”
“All of it adds up to the same thing: Trump is no longer expanding his power. He is bleeding it,” Wilson concluded.
