A decision by Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth to threaten to court-martial Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), a Navy pilot and astronaut, while Kelly’s GOP colleagues stand by and watch will haunt Republicans forever.
That’s the thinking of MS NOW’s “Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough, who used the Hegseth threat as an example of how GOP lawmakers and the president’s inner circle are trapped in a doom-loop of what he called ‘Trump derangement idiocy” as they cater to his worst impulses.
Linking Hegseth’s actions to Trump’s war on critics by having his people abuse the law in an effort to seek retribution, the MS NOW host lashed out at the president’s coddlers.
Noting that the charges against Kelly are based on Trump’s belief that the famed astronaut was illegally demanding that military members ignore orders, when Kelly and five other Democrats specified they were talking about “illegal” orders, co-host Jonathan Lemire pointed out, “We say this frequently, there is no one in the office in the White House to say no, and that’s by design.
“There were a lot of people around Trump 1.0 to say no — some of his most outrageous impulses were checked. There were guardrails in place. Those don’t really exist now.”
“But this is just bad politics!” Scarborough blurted.
“Like, where are the political people? Where are the pollsters?” he continued. “You do not take them on. This is, this is Trump derangement, coddling, Trump derangement, capitulating, Trump derangement, kowtowing. Trump derangement idiocy. It is Trump derangement political malpractice and the Republicans will pay and pay and pay for again fighting for Donald Trump’s right to say what he would do in 2016, which is order troops to do things that were illegal and they would do it anyway.”
