As death threats and infighting threaten a mass exodus of House Republicans from Congress, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) says President Donald Trump is losing control of his base, reports Axios.
“Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) scathing resignation has rattled her colleagues. Some are questioning whether the job is still worth it when the work is drowned out by censures, violent threats and loyalty tests to President Trump,” they report.
According to Axios, 41 members thus far have announced their plans to quit at the end of their terms, “with more expected to follow.”
Retiring Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) tells Axios he was “so angry” at the Trump administration’s proposed 28-point Russia-Ukraine peace plan last week that he “thought about” resigning early before his term is up in 2027.
Another House Republican anonymously tells Axios that, in terms of resigning, “the thought has crossed my mind” and “I know I’m not the only one.”
House Republicans’ razor-thin-majority is threatened by these defections, Axios reports.
Threats on lawmakers’ lives have surged since the assassination of MAGA podcaster Charlie Kirk, and Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) says it’s a factor in House Republicans’ resignations.
“It takes a toll on people,” he says.
Burchett also says they are frustrated by stagnation under Johnson’s speakership.
“We don’t ever seem to be doing anything,” Burchett tells Axios.
Greene agrees, saying Congress has been “sidelined by Johnson under full obedience” to the White House.
Simply put, Massie says, Trump “doesn’t have control of the base.”
