One of President Donald Trump’s former staffers bashed his comments about Democratic lawmakers telling military members that they can disobey illegal orders.
On Wednesday, some Democratic lawmakers posted a video on social media reminding military members that they swore an oath to the Constitution and not a single leader. Trump responded by calling those comments “seditious behavior” and saying the act could be “punishable by death.”
Several GOP members refused to condemn Trump’s comments, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared to defend the comments on Thursday.
Sarah Matthews, the deputy press secretary during Trump’s first administration, discussed Trump’s comments during an interview on MS Now on Friday.
“The gaslighting coming from this administration is mind-boggling, but not surprising,” Matthews said. “Watching the White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, and others defend this is absolutely insane to me. If this were any other president, we would be having conversations about the 25th amendment if they were calling for the opposing party members to be hanged.”
“And instead, she flips this over on how they’re inciting violence,” she added. “And to me, it looks like the president is the one very clearly inciting violence here. We’ve had a lot of conversations recently in the state of our politics, and especially in the aftermath of the horrific death of Charlie Kirk, about the need to tone down the rhetoric in this country and dial it back. But instead, the president is the one who keeps continuing to just ratchet it up. And I think that it’s really shameful.”
