President Donald Trump spent much of his morning on Thursday posting fury at a group of Democratic lawmakers, who previously served in the military, for putting out a video reminding service members that they have a duty to refuse orders that violate the Constitution. In multiple posts on Truth Social, he first said they should be locked up — then he escalated to call their behavior “seditious” and “punishable by death.”
He then retweeted another Truth Social user who said George Washington would have hanged them all.
Some of Trump’s rabid supporters applauded the rhetoric. John Strand, a freed January 6 rioter, proclaimed on X, “The American people are fed up with the Democrat Party’s open assault on the rule of law and constitutional order. It’s time to get serious.”
Elsewhere, however, Trump’s threats of death against members of Congress didn’t go down so well, with many suggesting Trump should be removed from office under the 25th Amendment.
“The President of the United States of America just called for the death of Democratic lawmakers,” wrote Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA). “This man is sick in the head.”
“Spiraling gets worse — the guy has totally lost it as Epstein’s looms,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI). “25th?”
“Trump screaming sedition because democratic Veterans made a message that the military can disobey and unlawful orders. Conveying the Uniform Code of Military Justice is NOT sedition. January 6th was sedition and Trump pardoned them all,” wrote veteran activist Skyleigh Uhrich, adding, “Trump is spiraling just like he did on January 6th because he knew it was over. If seditious behavior were punishable by death then why did he pardon all those convicted of seditious acts on January 6th … 25th Amendment NOW!”
“As if Trump knows what seditious means,” said writer Jay Thomas. “In any case, how is it seditious to beg troops to follow the constitution? Trump is basically admitting that he wants to issue illegal orders and demand they are followed.”
