Experts are warning that Republicans are “losing faith” in President Donald Trump as his approval rating drops to its lowest during his second term.
Trump’s handling of the economy and affordability, combined with his response to the Epstein file release, has brought his rating to 38% — the lowest since he returned to the Oval Office, The Daily Beast reports.
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds that Trump’s popularity with Republicans “once considered untouchable” is waning and plunging from 87% to 82% “as the president’s growing alienation from his base has seen cracks begin to form in the MAGA coalition,” according to The Beast.
Trump’s reputation has taken a hit following the Epstein vote after the Republican-led House and Senate voted to prompt the Department of Justice to release the files. Only 20% of Americans — including 44% of Republicans — say they approve of Trump’s handling of the Epstein files.
And among an overwhelming majority of Americans — 87% of Democrats and 60% or Republicans — said they think that the government is trying to conceal information about the Epstein ‘clients’ and powerful entities tied to the deceased financier and convicted child sex offender.
But the economy appears to be upsetting Americans even more.
“It’s all about prices,” Republican strategist Doug Heye told Reuters. “People are furious when they go out and spend money at the grocery store, and they can’t believe what they are spending.”
Analyst Charlie Cook told The Wall Street Journal that GOP allies could stay loyal despite the party fractures, but it’s too soon to tell.
“They’re kind of stepping out, but gingerly,” Cook said. “It’s a change from what we’ve seen, but I’m not going to hold my breath to see Republicans thumbing their noses at him with any regularity.”
